Mike Walker

About me:

I am a journalist, photographer, fine artist, and illustrator.

I hold a BFA magna cum laude from the Savannah College of Art and Design where I studied architectural history, photography, and illustration and an MFA in Painting/Fine Arts—also from SCAD. I have additionally studied at Rhode Island School of Design, the Academy of Art University, San Francisco State University, and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). I have taught art history at the Los Angeles Film School and have museum curatoriship experience from working at the University of Florida's Harn Museum of Art.

My encompassing goals in journalism shares a great deal with my efforts in the visual arts: to provide a cohesive, instructive, and engaging introspection into the topics I cover and to inform about the world.

My photography and illustration work, aside from supporting some of my own journalism, has been featured in diverse publications ranging from Savannah Magazine to Canadian Running and many others as well as in advertising campaigns. My main foci in photography are architecture, environmental, and editorial work of a narrative nature.

I am also a translator of Russian and Korean as well as journalist focused on Russia, Croatia, Serbia, and South Korea. In addition, I have written extensively on the American South, its culture, history, and architecture having formerly served as a staff writer for Porter Briggs: The Voice of the South and sports reporter for the North Florida News Daily. My general journalism has appeared in: Slate, The Bold Italic, The Moscow Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the South China Morning Post, Goldenseal, SEE: A Fortnight in Review, Croatia Week, CutBank, The ATA Chronicle, and InSerbia Network where I was also a staff writer covering aviation and sports.

I am fluent in English, Danish, Russian, Korean, and Serbo-Croatian.

I live with my family in a wild and rustic part of the great state of Florida.

In addition, I am an ardent athlete, being an accredited coach of track and field, soccer, diving, and basketball and an athlete in these sports plus freediving, surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Many of the best things I find to photograph are on mountain bike rides, runs, or hikes.

The main cameras I use are the Canon EOS R5, Sony A7rII, and ARRI Alexa XT.

My fine art is represented by SCAD Art Sales.

Some of my academic publications and conference papers can be found online at Academia.Edu.

An article I wrote about Savannah's Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood can be found here at my Medium account.

My concerns about how the war in Ukraine may benefit China— if not Russia—published in March of 2022 in the South China Morning Post, the leading English-language newspaper of southeast Asia.
